From Buried Pipes to Smooth Flow: A Success Story in Underground Pipe Replacement

Updated: Oct 3

We answered a call out one afternoon from a couple that was having issues with a clogged drain. We performed a pipe inspection to find out what the problem was and ran into an unexpected issue. The pipes were so old and corroded, We Lost our Camera!

Around 1980 builders stopped using cast iron pipes as the piping of choice and began switching over to PVC pipes. Over time water and cast iron begin to not get along and corrosion becomes a problem. Which is exactly what happened to this house. The cast iron had developed holes and during the pipe inspection your camera ran through one of the holes.

I was dealing with an issue of a clogged drain, I also had to tell this family that they needed a total pipe replacement… That is one thing a homeowner never wants to hear but is also one of the setbacks of older homes.

Above Ground Nightmare

One of the major costs for pipe replacement is the prep work. That means removing anything that is blocking access to the pipes. Includes cabinets, fixtures, and foundation. We have to lay tarps to help protect what is inside the home from any potential water damage.

I don’t want to put any homeowner through this kind of nightmare. I started doing some research on new ways to replace pipes in the least invasive way possible.

Underground Solutions

A new method of pipe replacement involves digging underground to access the pipes from below. This method is less invasive than the traditional method, which requires removing cabinets, fixtures, and foundation to access the pipes from above.

Advantages of Underground Pipe Replacement

  • Less invasive: No need to remove cabinets, fixtures, or foundation

  • Less damage to the home

  • Faster installation

  • Less mess

  • Less Expensive

How Underground Pipe Replacement Works

  1. A trench is dug around the outside of the home, exposing the pipes.

  2. The old pipes are removed and new pipes are installed.

  3. The trench is backfilled and the area is restored to its original condition.

Cost of Underground Pipe Replacement

I initially thought that underground pipe replacement would be more expensive than the traditional above ground replacement, but I was wrong. The cost of this project was less expensive.

Who Should Consider Underground Pipe Replacement?

Underground pipe replacement is a good option for homeowners who are looking for a less invasive and disruptive way to replace their pipes. It is also a good option for homeowners who have homes with limited access to the pipes from above.
